Chiropractor In Tallahassee, Fl Discusses How Aromatherapy Works

Posted By Dr. Eric Pragle, LMT, DC

Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that promotes wellbeing rather than treating a specific illness or condition in isolation.  It is used extensively in massage therapy and even chiropractic to treat the whole person.  It combines the sciences of chemistry and botany with the art of blending essential oils.

The healing of essential oils enters the body by inhalation (aromatherapy) or directly through the skin, and then into the bloodstream to affect the whole body.

There are two main routes by which the essential oils enter the body; through the nose by inhalation or by absorption through the skin.  At Pragle Chiropractic, during the aromatherapy massage we utilize both forms of absorption to maximize the healing benefits of both chiropractic and massage.  When the oil is inhaled, tiny molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream via capillaries in the nose, throat and lungs.  As the oil circulates the body, it acts according to its specific properties and often times according to what your body needs.  Some oils are stimulating or sedating, others antibacterial or antimicrobial and so on.  This amazing versatility makes it possible to tailor treatments to suit each individual's needs.   The nose is also the direct pathway to the olfactory center in the brain, so inhaling aromatic scents can influence the mood and affect hormonal secretions.

Skin absorption is accomplished primarily through massage.  Tiny pores in the skin draw the oils into the capillaries and from there into the bloodstream and lymphatic system.  Massage also promotes deep relaxed breathing, so allowing the oils to be inhaled at the same time.

Lastly, the benefits of aromatherapy are enhanced by a positive outlook.  If you like the oil's scent and believe in it's therapeutic powers , then you will be more open and responsive to the positive affects of essential oils.

Dr. Pragle believes strongly in the healing powers of essential oils and has been using them and studying them in depth for more than a decade.  Please visit www.praglechiro.com to book your appointment.  Located at 1820 Riggins Rd. #1, Tallahassee, FL 32308.
